Designing Systems That Think vs Systems That Execute

As organizations begin integrating AI into their products, many efforts start as features. A summarization tool is added to a report. A chatbot is introduced for support. A recommendation engine appears in search. These initiatives often emerge from specific use cases and are delivered as isolated functionality.

For decades, software has been designed to execute. Users take actions, and systems respond according to defined logic. Designers map flows, define states, and ensure that interactions produce predictable outcomes. This model shaped how UX matured as a discipline. Predictability supported usability, and consistency helped users develop confidence.

AI introduces a different class of systems.

Instead of executing predefined logic, AI systems interpret inputs, generate outputs, and adapt over time. These systems do not simply execute commands. They evaluate context, weigh probabilities, and produce outcomes that may vary.

This shift changes what designers are building.

Designers are no longer designing systems that execute. They are designing systems that think.

Execution-Based Systems

Execution-based systems follow deterministic logic. When a user performs an action, the system executes a defined response. These interactions are predictable and stable.

For example, when users submit a form, validation rules determine whether the submission succeeds. When users click a button, the system performs a specific action. These interactions are designed around clear cause-and-effect relationships.

Execution-based systems support:

These systems behave differently from execution-based software.

Control Becomes Shared

Execution-based systems place control primarily with users. Users initiate actions, and systems execute them.

This shared control requires careful design.

Users must understand when systems are acting, how to intervene, and how to refine outcomes.

Designing Thinking Systems

Designing systems that think requires expanding traditional UX approaches. Designers must consider:

These considerations extend beyond deterministic design.

A Shift in Design Responsibility
